The right first phase addresses your current priority with the least unnecessary cost and creates enough evidence to know when to continue, adjust, or change direction.
Learn when recomposition can replace two separate phases

A cut uses an energy deficit: over time, intake is lower than expenditure so body mass falls, with fat contributing more of the loss when training and nutrition protect muscle. A cut is not deliberate dehydration or removing carbohydrate and sodium to display a lower number for a few days.
A bulk uses a small surplus to support training and slow weight gain. The word “mass” does not mean every pound gained is muscle. The more energy exceeds what training can use, the more unnecessary fat is likely to accumulate.

Bulk first when building muscle is the priority
A small surplus becomes relevant when muscle is the main goal, your health and current weight do not create a clear reason to lose first, and you already perform a program that can progress. More food without a measurable stimulus does not automatically turn the excess into muscle.

A calorie number is not inherently a bulk or cut. Three thousand calories may be a deficit for one very active person, maintenance for another, and a large surplus for someone else.

In both directions, keep exercises stable enough to compare sessions. Another rep, a little more load, or better range of motion at similar effort tells you more than weight change without context.
Set continuation criteria before starting the phase
After calibration, hold one direction for at least three to four weeks unless health or adherence requires an earlier change. The period is not magic; it mainly prevents switching between surplus and deficit after every fluid fluctuation.
