Define total load before selecting plates
In a training plan, 100 kilograms normally means everything being lifted: bar plus plates, with collars included when your log counts them. The calculator therefore asks for target total and bar weight separately. Entering 100 kilograms of plates around a 20-kilogram bar would create 120 kilograms, a substantial programming error.
Do not assume every bar weighs 20 kilograms or 45 pounds. Technique bars, short bars, women’s competition bars, safety squat bars, trap bars, and some gym-specific models differ. Look for manufacturer markings or ask the facility. Record the bar when switching equipment would change comparisons across sessions.

Build two perfectly symmetric sides
After bar weight is removed, the remaining load is divided by two. Every listed value belongs on one side and must be mirrored exactly on the other. Large plates generally sit inward and smaller change plates outward, followed by collars when they are suitable for the movement and equipment.
If the exact target cannot be built from the selected pairs, the calculator displays the nearest lower combination. This prevents an unannounced increase. Keep the difference visible: accept the reachable load, change the target, or add a pair that actually exists, but never improvise by making one side heavier.
- Use the same values and order on the left and right.
- Never use a lone plate to correct only one side.
- Log the achieved load when the target is rounded down.
Example at 225 pounds With a 45-pound bar, 180 pounds remain, or 90 pounds per side. Two 45-pound plates on each side reach the target. If a specialty bar weighs 65 pounds, the same plate setup no longer produces 225, so the bar entry must change.

Configure the inventory you really have
Default plate presets are shortcuts, not promises about your gym. One facility may have 0.5, 1, 1.25, or 2.5-kilogram change plates; another may use only pound plates or larger increments. Choose one unit for the bar and plates, then keep only pairs you can physically use.
The current calculator assumes unlimited pairs of each selected value. When stock is limited, count the available pairs before accepting the result. Chains, bands, and accommodating resistance do not translate cleanly into one fixed barbell total; record them separately instead of hiding them inside a misleading number.

Connect the setup to a training load
The plate calculator does not decide what you should lift. A 1RM estimate can suggest a working range, while RPE or RIR can adjust that plan to the difficulty you actually experience. Once the target is chosen, this tool answers one practical question only: which plates go on each side of the barbell?
During the session, technique, pain, fatigue, and bar control take priority over the planned number. Set the rack correctly, use safeties suitable for the lift, and involve a competent spotter when appropriate. IPF and IWF rules describe competition equipment; they clarify standards but do not replace manufacturer instructions or your facility’s safety rules.

Place one plate on the left and its match on the right, keeping heavier plates inward. Compare both sides visually and secure collars whenever their use is appropriate.

Adjust rack height and safety arms, clear the area, and complete the necessary warm-up. If the bar feels uneven or unexpectedly heavy, rerack and recount instead of continuing.
