In a highly muscular athlete, greater body weight may reflect more lean mass, causing BMI to overstate fatness. Conversely, aging or low muscle mass can produce an ordinary ratio despite a less favorable body composition. These examples do not make the tool useless. They show why the next question should be what contributes to and accompanies the weight.
The relationship among BMI, body fat, and metabolic risk also varies across ethnic groups. That is not a reason to invent a personal threshold from ancestry alone. It is a reason to add waist circumference, family history, blood pressure, clinician-ordered tests, and qualified advice when risk is plausible. The CDC FAQ notes that the same BMI does not imply identical body fat in everyone.
One measurement rarely answers the real question. Instead, observe the trajectory over several weeks, using comparable weigh-ins if they are appropriate for you. Waist circumference can add information about abdominal size when the same landmark is used. For a strength trainee, performance, training volume, and recovery help distinguish a planned gain from a poorly understood change.
The appropriate action depends on context: stabilize one habit, seek care for an unexplained trend, or create a moderate calorie deficit when fat loss is a suitable goal. Do not chase a normal category mechanically. Pain, dizziness, rapid loss, an eating disorder, or a clinical concern takes priority over optimizing a ratio.
Two adults can receive the same result while one is gaining strength with a stable waist and the other is losing weight unintentionally. The ratio matches; the useful response does not.
