Method and assumptions

The Hodgdon–Beckett circumference method estimates body density from logarithms of height and circumference differences, then converts it to body-fat percentage.

The male equation uses height, abdomen and neck. The female equation adds hips. All measurements are converted to centimetres before calculation.

Fat mass and fat-free mass are then derived from entered body weight; they are not direct measurements.

How to use a circumference-based body-fat estimate

The Navy method turns height and body circumferences into an estimate. It is accessible and repeatable, but it does not observe body tissues directly. Its best use is tracking a trend with the same protocol, not producing an aesthetic verdict.

Short answer

Measure the same landmarks each time, keep the tape horizontal, and avoid compressing the skin. Repeat each circumference and keep the same equation and conditions. Compare the trend over two to four weeks alongside average body weight, waist circumference, and training performance. One change may reflect technique or hydration. The result is not a diagnosis, a DEXA measurement, or a grade of your appearance.

The Navy method estimates composition from height and circumferences

The Hodgdon–Beckett equations use measurements that can be collected with a flexible tape. Depending on the selected equation, height, neck, abdomen, and hip measurements enter different combinations. The formula relates those proportions to observations in a reference population. It does not scan the body or directly separate fat, muscle, water, bone, and organs.

That distinction prevents false precision. The displayed percentage depends on both the statistical relationship in the equation and the quality of your tape measurements. A decimal place does not mean the method knows body composition to one tenth of a percentage point. A repeatable protocol matters more than one supposedly perfect measurement

Use a flexible tape, keep it horizontal, and make light contact without pressing into tissue. Measure the landmarks specified by the form with a relaxed posture and comparable breathing. Take two or three readings and repeat the set when they differ substantially. A second person may improve consistency at landmarks that are hard to see or reach.

Choose a reproducible setting as well, such as the morning before training with normal hydration. Daily measurement is unnecessary. Measuring too often mostly creates more chances to change tape angle or tension. Keep the same method, equation, and anatomical landmarks; silently switching protocols breaks the trend.

  • Repeat under similar conditions at a sensible interval.

Read a two-to-four-week trend, not one decimal point

Measurement error can be as large as the body change you hope to detect over a few days. Space estimates out and examine their direction across two to four weeks. A gradual change reproduced with a stable protocol and supported by waist or body-weight data is more informative than a dramatic result you cannot reproduce the next morning.

If the percentage rises while average weight and waist remain stable, repeat the tape measurements before changing food or training. If several indicators move in the same direction for multiple weeks, the trend becomes more credible without making the exact percentage certain. Keep the raw circumferences so that a measurement error or protocol change remains visible.

Combine weight, waist, and performance without creating an aesthetic verdict

The useful decision depends on the goal. During fat loss, a gradual reduction in average weight or waist with broadly maintained performance may support the plan. During muscle gain, progress in the gym and a controlled body-weight trend add context the percentage cannot provide. During maintenance, stable measurements can be a valid outcome.

No body-fat threshold is a compulsory definition of health, attractiveness, or personal worth. Do not use the calculator to accuse someone of drug use, declare a natural limit, or pursue extreme leanness. Eating disorders, dizziness, rapid loss, pregnancy, illness, or clinical concerns take priority over optimizing a percentage and deserve qualified support.

An example of a coherent trend

Three spaced estimates decline gradually, waist circumference falls, and training loads remain stable. Together they support the possibility of change, without proving that the exact displayed percentage is the true composition.

Consistency of the protocol creates more value than frequent measurement.

  1. Define the protocol

How should I measure the abdomen?
